Canola Oil

Canola oil is a good moisturizer but is less saturated than other fats, so it can be slow to saponify

Castor Oil

Castor oil is often used to superfat. It attracts and holds moisture in the skin.Used with other vegetable oils to produce a nice hard bar of soap.

Cocoa Butter

Our cocoa butter is a pure, crushed butter obtained from the cacao bean. It has a beautiful, rich aroma of dark chocolate.This edible fat from the cocoa pod is a stable fat containing natural anitoxidants that give it a long shelf life of over 3 years. Cocoa butter is a soothing emollient that has been used for centuries in Africa for skin care. It has been traditionally used to heal and moisturize skin that has been exposed to the elements.

Coconut oil

Our superior quality organic coconut oil is extracted from dried coconuts, also known as copra. The coconuts are cut and dried until the moisture content of the meat is minimized. The dried copra is then grated and expeller pressed to remove the oil. The oil is then refined to produce an oil suitable for consumption. Coconut oil is an exceptional oil for dry, itchy or sensitive skin. It will not clog pores and it absorbs readily into the skin. Coconut oil is a gift to the soap making industry because of its resistance to rancidity and its ability to make a hard bar of soap with fluffy lather.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving a heavy greasy feeling.Grapeseed oil is rich in vitamins, minerals, linoleic acid and other essential fatty acids.

Hazelnut Oil

Hazelnut is an excellent moisturizer for soaps.Hazelnut oil is a light, penetrating oil that is slightly astringent. It is a suitable addition to formulations intended to be used on acne prone skin. Hazelnut oil is high in essential fatty acids and is soothing and healing to dry, irritated skin.

Honey

Honey is also a humectant, so it helps retain moisture on the skin in much the same way as glycerin.

Jojoba oil

Although jojoba is generally categorized with vegetable oils, jojoba is actually a liquid wax. Jojoba offers the traits of both an oil and a wax to make it an ideal ingredient within soap, cream, lotion, balm and massage oil formulations. It is highly penetrating and closely resembles the natural sebum within our skin. Use jojoba in facial blends to remove excess oils and to help balance the skin’s natural oil. Jojoba contains a natural anti-inflammatory called myristic acid and is useful in formulations for arthritis and rheumatism.

Kukui Nut Oil

The kukui nut is native to Hawaii and is high in linoleic acid. It is quickly absorbed into the skin. Excellent for skin conditioning after sun exposure, as well as for acne, eczema, and psoriasis. These acids are vital for the metabolism of healthy skin. Vitamins A, C and E are added to stabilize the oil. Kukui nut oil is easily absorbed by the skin. It soothes irritated, sunburned, or burned skin.

Lard

Lard is made from pig fat much like bacon fat. IT makes a nice lathery, white bar of soap. when added to or combined with vegetable oils such as coconut or palm

Mango Butter

Mango butter is extracted from the mango fruit. It is a yellowish oil and has almost no scent. It is a great moisturizer .Mango butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree. It has a high content of stearic acid which makes it similar to cocoa butter. Mango butter has good emolliency and lends protection against the sun. It is said to prevent drying of the skin and formation of wrinkles. Mango butter also reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores elasticity.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is excellent as a base oil in soaps, either in whole (Castile soap) or in part.Olive Oil prevents the loss of your skin’s natural moisture, softens skin and attracts external moisture to your skin. It helps keeps your skin soft, supple and younger looking.Olive oil attracts external moisture to the skin and still permits the skin to properly release sweat, shed dead skin and release sebum.

Palm Oil

Palm oil makes a hard bar that cleans well and is also mild.The quality of Palm oil is far superior to other vegetable oils that are filler oils. Palm oil is universal and used in many expensive luxury soaps.

Palm Kernel Oil Like coconut oil, palm kernel oil possesses a high percentage of lauric acid. This results in a hard soap that lathers well and gives firmness to balms and stick formulations. Palm kernel oil lends a smooth texture to soaps and balms.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil has a very high percentage of linoleic acid. It, therefore, helps to moisturize, nourish and restructure the skin Safflower oil is an unsaturated oil and should be used in combination with palm, coconut, or a similar oil. It is valuable for its moisturizing properties.

Sesame Seed Oil

Sesame oil is said to be good for Psoriasis, Eczema, Rheumatism, and Arthritis. It makes a good superfatting oil due to its moisturizing ability. It has a strong nutty scent. It makes a softish bar unless used in conjunction with other, more saturated oils.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a wonderful superfatting agent and contains a large percentage of ingredients that do not react with the lye thus remaining in the soap to nourish your skin.African healers have used shea butter for thousands of years to effectively treat for dry and aging skin. Its high content of non-saponifiables and unique fatty acid profile gives it the ability to moisturize and retain the elasticity of the skin. Shea butter can also help to protect the skin against the damaging effects of the sun while repairing cellular degeneration.

Vegetable Shortening or Soybean Oil

Vegetable shortening is normally made out of soybean oil.It produces a mild, stable lather and makes a very hard white bar when used alone and when mixed with other oils it makes a wonderful hard bar of soap.

Caffeine may help prevent or delay the progression of skin cancer.

How often can I use a Body Scrub? Don’t use the body scrub too often because overuse may damage the new layer of skin once the dead skin is off the body surface. You can use a body scrub once or twice a week. Also remember to use a very gentle body scrub in case you have a dry skin. Also be very careful during winters when too much of scrubbing can damage the already dry skin.

Homemade Coffee Body Scrub: Take 1 cup of finely ground coffee and add half a cup of fresh yogurt or milk to it. Gently rub the paste onto your body and massage in circular motion. This body scrub will not require a moisturizing treatment afterwards since the yogurt or milk makes the skin soft and supple. After the exfoliation have a warm water shower or a dip in the tub to discover the goodness of this body scrub.

In 1727, a military man, Captain Francisco de Mello Palheta, introduced prized coffee seeds from French Guyana for the very first time in Brazil. At the time, French Guyana had a monopoly on coffee beans and refused to make them available to Brazilians.

Through charm and romance, Captain de Mello Palheta wooed a sample of coffee beans from the governor's wife who rewarded him for his personal flair with a bouquet of flowers where she hid coffee beans as a gift for "memories' sake." This was the beginning of the coffee trade for Brazil. At the time, sugar was the main crop in Brazil. However, it was quickly surpassed by coffee.

The "Fazendas de Café" (coffee plantations) were run as small states by coffee growing families committed to establishing an image of nobility and high class status. About 67% of all farms have less than 10 acres. About 25% of farms have less than 50 acres. The remaining 8% exceed 50 acres. As the song goes in Brazil, "...they've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil..."

What is amazing about this huge land mass is that only 7% represents arable land; 1% permanent crops and the balance (92%) other use such as urban, mangroves, jungle, forests, etc.

International immigration has played a very influential role in the development of Brazilian culture. The heritage of most Brazilians today who have traced their family trees include European, African, Amerindian, Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Brazil's Coffee Regions
There are three main coffee growing areas in Brazil: Mogiana, Sul Minas and Cerrado. These areas feature moderate sunlight and rain. The temperatures are steady year-round at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal to grow Arabica and Robusta coffee trees. Arabica accounts for about 70% of total harvest. Robusta, a hardier plant that produces lower quality beans makes up the remaining 30%.

The Mogiana region: This is the area along the border of São Paulo and Minas Gerais states north of São Paulo. The Mogiana coffee region is named after the Companhia Mogiana Estrada de Ferro train line that ran through this area when trains and coffee were inseparable companions in commercial and community development. The Mogiana area is known for its rich red soil.

The Sul Minas region: This is the heart of Brazil's coffee country. The rugged, rolling hills of Sul Minas, are located in the southern part of Minas Gerais state northeast of São Paulo.

The Cerrado region: This is a high, semi-arid plateau surrounding the city of Patrocinio, between São Paulo and Brasilia. This area is located in Brazil's central high plains region.
Of all the coffees growing in these regions, Brazilian Santos Bourbon is Brazil's best well known Specialty Coffee.

Santos is a market name referring to the port through which this coffee is traditionally shipped.
The Arabica coffee plants that produce this coffee came from the rich volcanic soils of the island of Bourbon, now called the Island of Reunion.
From a historical perspective, the island of Reunion is located in the Indian Ocean, East of Madagascar. This island was an important stopover on the East Indian trading route. When the Suez Canal opened, the island lost its importance.
Fortunately for Brazil, the trees imported from the island of Reunion took root very well and started one of Brazil's main cash crops.
Brazilian Santos Bourbon is a light bodied coffee, with low acidity, a pleasing aroma and a mild, smooth flavor. Brazilian Santos Bourbon is dry-processed (dried inside the fruit) which is why some of the sweetness of the fruit carries into the cup.

Coffee is one of Brazil's most valuable and widely traded commodity crops.
Brazil's origins make it a musical country full of passion, sentiment and joy: Indians' reed flutes; Portuguese viola players, and African thrilling drum rhythms. Brazilian music includes the soft sounds of bossa nova, the driving beat of samba and other rhythms based on percussion instruments and hand clapping.

The exact origin of samba is unknown. Perhaps it was born in the streets of Rio de Janeiro from a combination of Portuguese courtly songs, African rhythms and native Indian fast footwork. The reality is samba remains a part of Rio de Janeiro's streets. Carnival is one of the largest parties on Earth when hundreds of samba schools and thousands of people put on an unforgettable display of colors, music, noise and, yes, a lot of Brazilian coffee!

Coffee is very much a part of Brazilian life where people encourage each other to enjoy a morning cup of coffee, to smell the flowers and to listen to the songbirds. There is a connection between coffee, songbirds and samba, Brazil's most popular rhythm. The natural sounds of songbirds influence many musical tunes and variations. The costumes of Carnival and daily clothing reflect colorful images and hues inspired by local wildlife.

In Brazil, however, "cafezinho" is the way to welcome anyone into homes, businesses or just about anywhere. In Brazil it does not take long to learn the phrase "você quer um cafezinho?" (do you want a little coffee?). This is a question heard everywhere, all day long and almost always followed by a very small cup of very potent coffee. You can call it a mini espresso with a powerful punch!

Although chemistry has refined some of the raw materials, handmade soap is basically the same as it was two thousand years ago although now thankfully we use vegetable fats rather than animal fats and these wonderful natural handmade Castile soaps are now available for us to buy.

The manufacturing of commercial soaps, on the other hand, changed radically during the ’39/’45 war when fats and oils became scarce forcing manufacturers to look for alternatives.

Synthetic soap made from detergents soon became normal and their relatively low cost and ease of manufacture ensured that this synthetic product was here to stay.

However, increasingly, consumers are looking for an alternative to the coarse and abrasive synthetic soaps that can be so damaging to the natural ph factor of the skin.

Handmade soap from natural oils is now very popular as people are looking for an alternative to detergent soap and a number of cottage industries have started making soaps the natural way from fats. Some still use lard ie animal fats, as their basis, but most use vegetable fats.

Vegan soap is now widely made using vegetable fats such as coconut oil, sunflower seed oil and many others. Coconut oil produces a good lather in liquid and hard bar soap but is very drying for the skin. Most people prefer the old fashioned liquid soap used by hospitals made with nothing but olive oil and potassium hydroxide. Olive oil is almost 90% Olmec acid, an extremely mild fatty acid. As a base for soap olive oil creates a gentle moisturising lather making it ideal for sensitive skin as well as safe for babies and children.

The first records of Castile soap being imported into Britain go back to the 1560′s and much mention is made in Crusader records of this pure white hard soap produced in Easter Mediterranean lands. Castile soap was originally 100% olive oil soap, named after the Castile region in Spain, and loved by our great grandmothers as the ultimate in luxury.

This week I took one of the soap out of the the box, from the line Natural Handcrafted Soap.
It was to bathe my daughter, but has become my favorite soap., Butter and Goat Milk with Oatmeal and Honey Soap.

Day After was a hot day, when the skin seeks refreshment and care for freshness , -
I try another soaps the Lemongrass Soap.
Lemongrass Natural soap are refreshing, stimulating and soothing.
Was fantastic.

I had also send a friend from Brazil for the Carnival in Rio a kit with a Brazilian Coffee Soap.
Brazilian Coffee Scrub are Great for as a hand and foot and body scrub soap.
Brazilian coffee grinds absorb garlic and onion smell off your fingers, I recommended this soap as a hand and foot and body scrub soap.
Great kit after Carnival dance all day!

I’ve been drinking a fair amount of coffee to help jump start my mornings.
I haven't be tired of waking up and having to wait for my morning java to brew.
I realized I could use my Brazilian scrub coffee soap to start my mornings instead of a drink!
Was a bathe with some special motivation.

Brazilian Coffee Scrub Soap *not* contain any harsh ingredients like ethanol, diethanolamine, polyethylene glycol or cocyl isethionate.

This specialty milk soap is richer in fats and emollients than whole milk. For centuries, milk has been used as a natural, soothing skin cleanser and skin softener. This gentle soap is made with buttermilk and goats milk both are natural, soothing skin cleanser and moisturizer. We add oatmeal which calms irritated skin and other oil which adds moisturizes to the skin. Buttermilk is a very mild soap, great for combination skin and has a luxurious lather.. We use fresh creamy buttermilk and fresh goats milk straight from farm in our soap. We never use powdered milk or water. This soap bar is good for combination skin with amazing luxurious lather.

After years of making soap for her 13 children, her family finally convinced her to open a small soap shop in Sao Paulo Brazil where she made soaps with her family for 25 years, those soap recipes found there way to North Carolina last year when I went back to Brazil for Christmas and asked grandmother for food recipes to bring back to NC. While looking through boxes of recipes we came across all her old soap and essential oil recipes.

Handmade Soap: What you should know about it !

I hope this information about why handmade soap is so good for your skin

What's wrong with the stuff I can find at my local grocery store?
If you buy the soaps you'll find in the grocery store and read the ingredients you'll find things like etidronate potassium chloride or how about cetyltrimethylamoniumbromide (what a mouthful!). Do you really want to use that on your skin?

Many of the commerically available bars are not even soap, they are detergents. Detergents are great cleaners for your laundry, or your dishes, but not for your skin (Not so good for the environment either). The reason is that detergents clean by stripping away the oils which hold the dirt, and therefore they are very drying to skin.

What's right with the handmade stuff?
Most handmade soap is made with vegetable oils like olive oil, coconut oil, and palm oil. It has extra oil added which stays on your skin to moisturize it after the soap is rinsed away. It also conatins glycerin, a byproduct of the chemical reaction that produces soap. Glycerin attracts moisture and holds it so your skin can absorb it. The large manufacturers that do make real soap usually separate out the glycerin and sell it seperately to make the lotions and creams you'll need after drying out your skin with detergents.

Goats Milk
Goats milk has vitamins and minerals to nourish your skin and it has lipids that help seal in moisture. Goats milk soaps are close to the same pH level as our skin and are therefore more gentle.

Why goats and not cows milk?
All kinds of milk can be used in soapmaking, but goats milk has more vitamins and minerals than cows milk, which is great, but the reason it's better for soapmaking is the structure of it's fatty acids (complicated chemistry stuff). Simply put, it combines more smoothly to make a creamier soap which produces a rich, thick lather. If you like great lather a goats milk soap is the one for you!

Oatmeal
Oatmeal has been known as a skincare star since ancient times. Not strait from the carton though. You need to grind it very fine. Ground oatmeal actually binds to the skin and holds moisture there, helping the skin absorb the water.

If you have skin problems (dry, red, itchy, scaly,etc) a 100% natural, perhaps unscented soap with ground oatmeal is a good choice.

Scent
Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil
Scent is the most important ingredient for some soap buyers. I've had people buy soap just to make their bathroom smell good. That's great but they need to use it in the bath or shower too. Soap can be scented with either a natural essential oil or a fragrance oil.

Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted (usually by distillation) from a plant. Fragrance oils are blended synthetic aroma compounds or natural essential oils or a combination of both.

For a soap to be labeled Natural it will usually be scented only with essential oils. But just because it's natural doesn't always mean it's safer than fragrance oil. Some essential oils come with safety warnings. And some essential oils are just too expensive to use in soapmaking. A half an ounce of sanalwood can cost around $100. Or rose, which is a very popular scent can run you $400. (Yips!) So many soapmakers will use both essential oils and fragrance oils in their different selections.

If you are not sensitive to fragrances, choose whatever smells nice to you. But if you have problems with fragrances you should read the ingredients carefully and make an informed decision. All good soapmakers will list their ingredients on the soap labels and on their websites.

Someone needs to invent a way for us to smell things on the internet!

Color
Natural and Synthetic
Color makes soap prettier, but doesn't contribute any skin care benefits. Powdered material from plants can be used to color soap, dyes can be used, or ground mineral pigments can also be used.

Honey
Honey is vitamin rich. It has vitamin B,C,D, and E. Also, it's thought to have a
slight natural anti-bacterial benefit.

It adds a light, warm, sweet scent, a bit of extra lathering, and is a humectant (a substance that draws moisture from the air).

Clays
Clays have been used since ancient times for masks and skin therapy. They have a slight exfoliating effect and they draw oils and impurities from the skin. A clay mask can unclog the pores and stimulate blood circulation. In soapmaking clays are most often added to facial and shaving soaps. Except for Koalin, sometimes called white clay, they are slightly astringent since they do take oil away from the skin.

A soap with french green clay added would be a good choice for oily skin.
Herbs
Herbs are added for color, for healing properties, and just for added decorative interest. There are too many herbs that can be used in soap to list here. If you are interested in a particular one I suggest the website on herbs in the links section.

Acne, which is often called zits or pimples, is, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most common condition affecting the skin. Although anyone can get acne, it is most common in teenagers and young adults.

Acne can have several causes. The major culprits are often inflammation, bacteria, oil and clogged pores. While those with severe acne should see a physician, many people can have an acne-free face by taking good care of their skin and actively preventing acne breakouts.

Step 1
Wash your face with a gentle Natural Hancrafted Soap twice per day. Do not scrub hard or rub vigorously, as this can actually make acne worse, according to Cornell University Health Services. Dry by carefully patting your face with a towel.

Century Old Family of Natural Handcrafted Soap

Santa Lucia Murari Borba was a farmer's daughter from Murari's Borba, born in Italy 1904. She moved to Brazil in 1917 from her home in Toscany where she had to learn to make soap from scratch and essential oils from the plants out of necessity.
After years of making soap for her 13 children, her family finally convinced her to open a small soap shop in Sao Paulo Brazil where she made soaps with her family for 25 years, those soap recipes found there way to North Carolina last year when I went back to Brazil for Christmas and asked grandmother for food recipes to bring back to NC. While looking through boxes of recipes we came across all her old soap and essential oil recipes.

Furthermore, oatmeal is great for sensitive and acne prone skin; it can be used as a natural cleanser and exfoliant - leaving skin smoother, healthier and less irritated. Hooray!

Oatmeal Facial Cleanser: Pour about one tablespoon of ground oatmeal into your palm. (For best results, grind oatmeal in a food processor until fine and store in a tightly closed jar.) This soap is made with goats milk and coconut milk , both are a natural, soothing skin cleanser and moisturizer. We add oatmeal which calms irritated skin and honey which adds moisturizes to the skin. Coconut-oil infused soap moistures the skin. It's delicate, non-oily, and sweet-smelling as a tropical breeze. We use fresh creamy goats milk made from farm fresh local milk. We never use powdered goats milk or water. Goat milk is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. Its gentle and nourishing properties bathe your skin in luxury. The oatmeal naturally exfoliates your skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and silky soft.

Ghee, or clarified butter, is an Ayurvedic staple used to moisturize and purify the body. It's also a great digestive and detox aid because it stimulates the liver to secrete bile. The depleted vegetable oil will be converted into biodiesel and the remaining glycerin will be purified to become FURTHER Soap. The biodiesel will be used to fuel the two Dostal family cars, and the Batali-infused FURTHER hand soap will be returned to Mozza's bathrooms. Patrons will dine on Mozza's gourmet fare and then wash with FURTHER -- participating in a perfect, sustainable circle.
