If you’ve ever used a good bar of handmade soap you’re probably not going to want to go back to store brands ever again. Not only does handmade soap smell wonderful but it’s also much more gentle on your skin than commercial brands of soap.

But I thought that handmade soap was harsh for your skin, doesn’t it contain lye?
I used to make my own soap and this is one of the questions that would always come up in conversation. And the truth of the matter is that all soap is made from lye but to put it simply during the soap making process the lye goes through a chemical process to become soap and once it has went through this process it is no longer lye.
The soapmakers of yesterday didn’t have access to all the wonderful products and additives that today’s soapmaker uses. So their soap did tend to be harsh, In our grandparents and great grandparents day soapmakers used animal fat (lard) and lye to make their soap and this is probably where everyone got the idea that handmade soap is harsh.
